We have a very unique and vibrant music life at our school – both during and after school hours. This is something we are very proud of!
All students in grades 1-9 play an instrument that is part of a symphony orchestra:
In grades 1 to 4, students play in a class orchestra twice a week. All students play a string instrument.
From 5th grade, there is one orchestra lesson per week. Students can continue on the string instrument or choose another instrument that is part of a symphony orchestra.
All orchestra lessons are during school hours.
All classes from 1st to 9th grade also have weekly choir and music lessons. In addition, the whole school sings together every morning at the joint assembly after the main subject lesson.
The various orchestras and choirs perform for parents and other interested parties at the school’s Christmas bazaar and Midsummer celebrations.
So music is a big part of school life.
Compulsory instrumental lessons
For all students from 5th to 9th grade, instrumental lessons are compulsory so that each student can improve their skills in orchestra lessons and develop their musicality on their instrument.
Instrumental lessons at Byens Steinerskoles are administered by the school, which is responsible for all organization and administration of instrumental lessons. All questions regarding this can be directed to the school’s music coordinator.
All instrumental lessons take place at the school, primarily after school, but in some cases also during the school day.
Lessons are given as duo lessons where students can motivate each other. If the student enjoys playing solo, it is possible to purchase this. Talk to the school’s music coordinator and/or instrumental teacher if this is your wish.
Choice of instrument
At the end of kindergarten, the school’s music teachers visit the class and show the children the different string instruments: Violin, Viola, and Cello. Each child, in consultation with the music teacher and you, the parents, chooses which instrument they will play from 1st grade.
At the start of the school year in 1st grade, the class forms a small class orchestra that receives lessons on their string instruments twice a week.
The pupil plays their string instrument until 4th grade when it becomes possible to either switch to another instrument that is part of a symphony orchestra or to continue on the same instrument. This choice is made in collaboration with the orchestra teacher, student, and parents.
Purchasing a musical instrument
Families are expected to purchase or rent instruments elsewhere. The music teachers will be available to guide any new purchases.
Unfortunately, the school does not have any instruments available and it is therefore not possible to rent a musical instrument from the school.
